Bunga Pahar - White/Gold - Weaving your dreams into truly wonderful gifts!

This one's ordered by my mother's neighbour. Thanks to To' Puan Roslina who just recently ushered in her first son in-law into her family. Her eldest princess, Noordini, weds the prince of her heart in Sheraton Subang Hotel - 09.10.2008.

Bunga Pahar in a Malay wedding is a set of handcrafted flower (bunga) stalks, arranged in a bouquet on a flower stand called pahar. Hence the name.

Back in the old days, the pahar was just a tray, and the bunga pahar is carried on the tray by a person appointed from the bride/groom side, in a contingent to the wedding party at their new in-laws' house. This bunga pahar until today, acts as a present for the new family, from each side of the bride/groom.

Once the contingent arrives at the party, the bunga pahar is placed in front of the dais (pelamin). Traditionally, there was no stand to arrange each flower stalk, therefore the Malays used a small portion of a banana tree trunk, placed vertically on top of the pahar, where the flower stalks are pierced into the banana tree trunk, to form a bouquet arrangement. Once the bride and groom are seated on the dais, a few family members from both sides of the joined couple approach the dais, priority given to the elder family members, and bless the couple in a merenjis ceremony (sprinkle the couple with turmeric rice, a concoction of screw-pine leaves, flowers and rose water). In this ceremony, each bunga pahar stalk is then plucked out and presented to each family member who bless the couple.

These days, bunga pahar stands are readily available in the market, and it's easier to carry the flowers to a wedding, and more sturdy and lighter than a banana tree trunk

. The flowers are now handcrafted in extravagant designs, the more exclusive the better.
